The Corpus Christi rally
The trump Venezuela oil tanker moment came on Tuesday, when Trump stood in front of the vessel at a Corpus Christi rally in Texas and told the crowd it had "one million barrels of oil on it", arriving "at zero cost to the American taxpayer". He then turned to Venezuela's political future, saying: "Maybe some day soon it'll become a prosperous 51st state". He celebrated what he called "the greatest oil victory in history".
The oil deal
The tanker's cargo flows from an agreement struck with Venezuela's interim government, a body backed by Trump's own administration. Trump claims the deal will ultimately cover "billions" of barrels of oil. Minutes before taking the stage, he posted on Truth Social that he had made the Western Hemisphere the Energy Capital of the World "by unleashing Energy Dominance from Alaska, all the way down to Venezuela", and separately claimed US fuel prices "will soon come plummeting down".
After Maduro
The 51st state remark came nine months after US forces deposed Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro in January, capturing the country's long-serving leader. After a raid on his Caracas residence, Maduro was taken to New York to face criminal charges.
Critics point to what has not followed the capture:
- No democratic transition has been pushed by the administration
- No elections have been held since Maduro was detained by US forces
Election-week backdrop
The rally lands days before midterm elections, with tens of millions of Americans set to vote. Trump has floated territorial ambitions before, speaking of acquiring Greenland, Canada and Mexico. Opinion polls show his approval ratings falling to record lows amid his foreign policy and tariffs.
The push for Venezuelan oil also carries the urgency of the gas prices iran war link: Trump opted into the war with Iran in February, and prices at the pump rose nationwide after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, a passageway for 20% of the world's oil supplies.
