Trump attacks Cornyn and Rove for 'hurting Texas' as Paxton trails in Texas Senate race
Donald Trump has accused fellow Republicans of 'doing everything possible to make it hard' for Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee in the Texas Senate race, as polls show the Democrat James Talarico holding a slight lead.
Trump blames 'political hacks' for Paxton's troubles
In a Truth Social post, Trump criticized incumbent senator John Cornyn and the strategist Karl Rove, claiming they were 'sadly, and very stupidly' working against Paxton out of personal jealousy towards him, and were 'hurting Texas and, more importantly, hurting the United States of America!'
He added that a Paxton loss would be the fault of what he called political hacks who, in his words, have ineffectively opposed him throughout his career:
WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Political Hacks like John Cornyn and Karl Rove
Talarico holds a slight lead in a Republican safe seat
Polls show the Democratic nominee James Talarico with a slight lead over Paxton, even though Texas is often seen as a Republican safe seat. The stakes for the party are high:
- Paxton has served as attorney general of Texas since 2015.
- If he loses, it would be the first time a Republican failed to win a Senate election in Texas since 1988.
Midterms campaign ahead
Trump resumes his midterms campaign with a rally in Dalton, Georgia at 2.45pm ET on Friday, followed by a closed-press Republican National Committee event in Palm Beach, Florida. On Saturday he heads to Highland Heights, Kentucky, which sits on the border of Ohio, for another midterms rally.
