Trump Georgia rally: false claim that Jon Ossoff was 'never elected'

At a rally in north Georgia, Donald Trump again claimed the 2020 election in Georgia was fraudulent and alleged that Jon Ossoff's election as US senator was illegitimate. Trump said Ossoff does not represent Georgia's values, adding: "And he was never elected."

The false election claim

Speaking to supporters at the Dalton rally, Trump repeated the fraud claims about the 2020 contest and dismissed Ossoff's tenure as the product of an illegitimate result. The senator's election, according to Trump, did not reflect the state's voters.

"And he was never elected."

What Trump told the crowd

The address ranged across his record and his political targets. Trump said he was about to complete the "most successful" two-year run of a president in history, pointing to stock market gains, low unemployment and poverty rates, and the establishment of "Trump accounts" for newborns.

  • He again told voters they would receive a $5,000 government check if Republicans hold the House, claiming $21tn in pledged foreign manufacturing investments would offset the trillion-dollar cost - though most of those pledges remain unfulfilled.
  • On Venezuela, he touted the overthrow of the government and said: "Forty-eight hours, and that war was done."
  • Describing the early days of the war on Iran, he said of Iran: "They'll blow up Israel, they'll blow up the Middle East," and added that "Iran is the only country where nobody wants to be president." The Iran war has caused a spike in gasoline and diesel prices.
  • On immigration, he declared: "In the past 17 months, zero illegal aliens have been admitted into the United States."
  • He dismissed cost-of-living criticism, calling the term "affordability" Democratic propaganda, and attacked anti-discrimination policies he terms "DEI", saying: "Everything is based on merit."

The crowd and the scene in Dalton

About 1,200 people packed grandstands at Dalton municipal airport for the rally, which began at about 2pm. Trump took the stage at about 4.20pm, 80 minutes after his scheduled start, leaving roughly 300 people standing unshaded in the Georgia sun.

Two protesters briefly unfurled an anti-ICE banner and were hustled out of the grandstands quickly by security; the assault of a protester in Ohio by Trump supporters on Monday was not repeated.

"Donald Trump is the greatest president of all time," said Tracy Spencer of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Of conservatives disillusioned with the president, she said: "Well, none of my friends and family are expressing that to me, because they know better."

Ossoff now faces Collins in the November election, with the most recent polling putting him nine points ahead.
